For Wild Turkeys, Concentrate on Camouflage Outside of the hunting blind, one of the best pieces of equipment in your turkey hunting arsenal is your camouflage. There are several varieties available and this upland game bird will force you to blend in as best as possible if you are to get a bird within bow range. The wild turkey is unique in its ability to see in color. So choose a pattern that is the closest to the habitat you are going to hunt in.
Some more helpful hints to keep you from being detected are: 1. Never wear bright colors, especially not red, white, blue or black because these are the colors of a wild turkey gobbler. 2. Springtime weather changes rapidly and can turn a fun hunt into a miserable time. Dress in layers. Waterproof is a plus. 3. Wear dark undershirts and socks, and pants long enough to be tucked into boots. This will keep insects, dirt and brush out of your pants 4. Keep your hands and head camouflaged when calling. 5. When using a camouflage blind or netting, maintain a clear field of view. 6. Avoid motion as much as possible. Turkeys have a 360 degree field of view. 7. Be mindful of carrying your harvested bird out. Cover your bird with hunter orange or wear a reversible vest or hat with hunter orange on the inside.

Another great method of acquiring the skill of uphill and downhill shooting is to participate in as many 3 - D shoot as you can. This will not only add to your shooting and distance judging ability, it will remove the target panic many archers fall victim to especially during hunting season. The Bend Bowman host a variety of indoor and outdoor 3 - D shoots each year. See our EVENTS for more information. |
